Young Digital Makers Camp- July 20th-24th
PLUS EXTRA DATES July 27th – July 31st
FABLAB Manorhamilton invites all children aged 9 to 14 to explore their creativity using digital technologies in a week long Maker Camp. The camp will introduce you to the tools of digital fabrication and making things with computer controlled machines. You will spend each day making and personalising your own products and creations to take home. The emphasis is on being creative, having fun, making some cool things and learning some new skills along the way.
DAY 1
We begin the week with a group project to make a Geodesic Dome out of recycled newspaper. This is a great team building exercise as everybody has a hand in planning and constructing the dome. Basic structural engineering lessons will be learnt along the way. We finish the day by having an overview of what the FABLAB contains and how other Labs around the world are helping their local communities make useful things.
DAY 2
We will be using the first FABLAB machine today – the Vinyl Cutter. We will be making amongst other things, Logos, T-Shirts, Decals (Wall Art and Stickers), Door Signs, LED Nightlights. We will also learn about the different types of 2D graphics and how to manipulate them using the free Inkscape software application.
DAY 3
Today is Laser day. We will be using the Laser Cutter to cut and engrave different types of materials such as wood, acrylic, cardboard and possibly chocolate bars. Using Inkscape and 123D Make software we will show how 2D shapes can be put together to make a 3D model. Projects today will include jewellery making, crafting board games, 3D jigsaws and construction toys.
DAY 4
Enter the world of 3D by creating your own 3D scan of the world. Today we use the 3D scanner to create 3D models that we will play with in Tinkercad and 123D Design, free modelling applications. We explore how a 3D Printer actually works and create some 3D printed pencil toppers and maybe the odd Minion or two!
DAY 5
Let’s get Squishy! Today we make some squishy circuits using ElectroDough! We will see how electricity flows through Play-Doh and how we can use this to make LEDs flash and Buzzers buzz. We will create electrodough robots, cars and rockets and experiment with combining conductive and non-conductive materials.
